Easter Parade Sunday, April 20

4/18/2014 - By Marea Edynak

Put on Your Easter Bonnet and We'll See you on  Fifth Avenue. Every Easter since the 1870's New Yorkers and Visitors put on their Easter finery and stroll down Fifth Avenue to be seen and photographed.

The world famous parade has been glorified in song and movies around the world. What many people don’t know is that the Parade isn’t really a parade at all. It is a Happening, a wonderfully creative and zany happening and all of the people in New York are invited to join in.

The City closes off Fifth Avenue to traffic from 49th 57th Streets every Easter and people dogs, birds and snakes are dressed up in Spring Finery to stroll down the Avenue and be photographed. The church bells ring, the street venders hawk their wares and everywhere strangers and friends are wishing each other Happy Easter. It doesn’t matter what your religion. This is a day for all to share and celebrate.
Irving Berlin wrote the Easter Parade Sone and itwas published in 1933. The words follow.
In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it,
You'll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade.
I'll be all in clover and when they look you over,
I'll be the proudest fellow in the Easter parade.
On the avenue, fifth avenue, the photographers will snap us,
And you'll find that you're in the rotogravure.
Oh, I could write a sonnet about your Easter bonnet,
And of the girl I'm taking to the Easter parade.

Happy Easter Everyone
